A closer look at the Mezzala player role in Football Manager.
What is a Mezzala?
Football Manager states: This is the modern interpretation of the Mezzala, a central player that likes to drift wide and operate in the half-spaces. The Mezzala is essentially a central/half-winger, who likes to do his defending slightly further up the field, although he generally have less defensive responsibility.
The Mezzala is available with both Support and Attacking duties.
Traditional No.8
The Mezzala can be best described as the 'traditional' No.8 in a three man midfield, being the most wide player on either the left or right side. This is the player with the most attacking moves and will be the one who will move between the midfield and attack. He can be compared with a box-to-box midfielder but with less defensive duties.
When do I pick a Mezzala?
A Mezzala is an ideal player role if you play with three central based midfielders in either a 4-3-3, 4-1-3-2 or a 3-5-2. The Mezzala will be considered as your most creative midfielder and will be the one who will carry the team forward. It is advised to use a defensive minded midfielder next to him in the middle of the park as the Mezzala tends to roam from his position a lot, while forgetting about his defensive duties.
Which attributes does a Mezzala need?
A Mezzala is a creative player and will often see the ball during attacking play. He will need the technical skills to pass a ball but also needs to be able to make quick decisions as he will often move into tight spaces.
