A closer look at the Raumdeuter player role in Football Manager.
What is a Raumdeuter?
Football Manager states: His main role is to find pockets of space in which to operate. Essentially a wide poacher, the Raumdeuter takes up seemingly harmless positions out wide. He waits for the opportune moment to burst through the defensive line for that telling shot or cross.
He is difficult for defenders to pick up as he will often drift from his assigned position looking for any opportunity to exploit. This can result in quiet periods during which he may neglect his defensive duties, therefore adequate cover and a strong team shape are key in order to fully utilise his attacking prowess in the final third.
The Raumdeuter is only available with an Attacking duty
Striker on the wings
In short, a Raumdeuter is actually nothing more than a winger who needs the attributes of a striker. He will often cut inside and then try to find space in the opponent's penalty area to aid his fellow striker(s). This role is therefore ideal if you play with a lone striker but you want the strength of two strikers.
When do I pick a Raumdeuter?
Only play a Raumdeuter when you use a formation with a single striker. If you have too many players in the opponent's area it will become too crowded and you will have troubles to find space.
It is also a good option if you lack a winger, but have a good secondary striker who is also able to play as a winger. If the player has the needed attributes he could aid your lone striker up front and you won't have to bench a good striker!
Which attributes does a Raumdeuter need?
The Raumdeuter is one of the player roles where the technical and physical sides of his profile are considered to be less important. He will need to be a clever player and he will have to know when and where to pop-up, while he will need the anticipation to decide when to make his runs.
As we already said: mental attributes are key for this role. He needs to be able to anticipate when to make his runs or where the ball will be after a cross. He will then need Composure, Concentration and Decisions to be of a high level to finish off that one chance he will get.
His desireable attributes are a big plus if he has them, but not a big disaster if he lacks one of these. Work Rate could be considered as the most important of the desireable attributes and we would maybe even pick that attributes as essential.
Key | Desirable |
---|---|
Finishing | First Touch |
Anticipation | Technique |
Composure | Work Rate |
Concentration | Acceleration |
Decisions | Stamina |
