The Regista role

Another in-depth article on a lesser known player role in Football Manager. This time we will be discussing the role of the Regista. What kind of player role is this, which positions are available for this role and which attributes does he need.

What is a Regista?

FM states: The Regista is a more aggressive version of the deep-lying playmaker suitable for possession-orientated systems that press high up the pitch. Given complete freedom to dictate play from deep positions, the Regista offers a dynamic and unpredictable creative outlet from behind the attack who seeks who seeks to maintain intense pressure by constantly looking for new chances as his more advanced teammates get into goal scoring positions.

So he will act the same as a Deep-lying playmaker, but will have more creative freedom and he will have a bigger defensive task. Whilst the Deep-lying playmaker will hold their position in front of the defense and will be on his best when your team has the ball, the Regista will also play a role when your team is NOT in possession. He will also be tasked with pressing opponents when your team does not have the ball. BUT; he is not a player that will move to far from his base position to recover the ball. He will cover the space between your defense and the halfway line.

Basically; the Regista would be the better choice if you prefer a tactic which has high-pressing and prefers to dominate possession, whilst the Deep-lying playmaker would be the better choice if you don’t want to put a lot of pressure on your opponent.

Which attributes does he need?

Obviously he will be needing the technical ability to create and dictate the play for your team. But the Regista is way more than a playmaker. He will need to be Physically strong as well, as he will fight for possession, tackling his opponents in the process. So, speed, strength and stamina are vital.

Key attributes

  • First Touch
  • Passing
  • Technique
  • Composure
  • Decisions
  • Off the ball
  • Visions
  • Balance
  • Stamina

Desirable attributes

  • Tackling
  • Aggression
  • Anticipation
  • Concentration
  • Determination
  • Positioning
  • Team Work
  • Strength

A Regista’s first task for your team will be making the play and dictating the tempo. Obviously he will need good Passing and Technique. Also a good First Touch is vital for him if he is put under pressure and needs to act fast. With a good first touch he can create space for himself. Tackling is a desirable attribute for the Regista. He will put some pressure on his opponents when he tries to win the ball back for your team, so winning tackles instead of losing them would be a bonus.

The Regista needs to be unaffected by mental pressure when creating the play, so Composure and Decisions are vital. Also his movement without the ball is needed for him to create enough free space. Vision is needed to create the play and see gaps. The desirable attributes are needed for the ball-winning aspect of the Regista. He needs to be aggressive when battling with the opponent and he needs to be determined enough, whilst working hard enough for the team to keep on fighting.

The Regista isn’t required to be Speedy, but if you can find one that is always a plus. Attributes that he does need are Balance and Stamina. He will need to be able to stay on his feet whilst attacking the ball and opponents. A high attribute for Strength is a good added attribute to add even more power. The Stamina attribute is obviously needed for him to have the ability to keep on covering those yards during the game.
