Relegated clubs in FM22
After a season full of disappointments, you as a football fan get new hope. Your club has been relegated and that is very painful. Nevertheless, it can offer sufficient opportunities for a new and much more successful season. At these clubs, you as a manager are given the task of forgetting the disappointing season and get the club back to the level from which they came as quickly as possible. Are you up for the challenge?
AFC Wimbledon
We start the list with AFC Wimbledon, which is actually THE Football Manager club. This club has been sponsored by Sports Interactive for years and plays with Football Manager on its chest. After Wimbledon FC went down in 1999 and merged into MK Dons, fans of the club founded AFC Wimbledon in 2002. From that moment their journey to the top of English football started. The club achieved several promotions promotions in a row and in 2011 the club officially returned to the English Football League by forcing promotion in an exciting final against Luton Town.
In recent years, Wimbledon has been a regular face in the Football League One but failed to achieve promotion to the Championship and eventually Premier League. In the 2021/22 season, Wimbledon had a bad year, finishing 23rd out of 24, meaning it would be relegated to League Two again.
Dundee FC
Dundee FC is one of the few clubs in the world that has achieved promotion without having to play for it themselves. When Glasgow Rangers were declared bankrupt, they were allowed to take their place in the Premiership.
Dundee is known in Scotland as the back-and-forth club as they have been relegated no less than eight times since 1979. After the club forced promotion in 2021, Dundee again failed to avoid relegation in the Premiership. They finished twelfth and were relegated again to the Championship. There, the team will again try to force promotion and return to the highest level for the third time in ten years.
Girondins Bordeaux
It was close to whether Bordeaux would completely disappear from the French football ladder this summer. The club had big financial troubles after a major investor went bankrupt and the American owners refused to assist the club during the COVID pandemic.
In 2021 the club was sold and under the new owner Bordeaux hoped for better times. Unfortunately, the financial problems continued and the club failed to impress in Ligue 1. They were relegated to Ligue 2 by finishing in last, but were then moved back to the third tier by the French Football Association. The club fought the forced relegation and did so successfully. Bordeau plays in the Ligue 2 and can almost smell the highest French football competition. In 1999 Bordeaux won the French league for the sixth and final time. Can you bring them back to the top of the Ligue 1?
Cagliari
Cagliari is a club with a rich history in Italian football. The club was founded in 1920 and plays its matches on the Italian island of Sardinia. Over the years, the club collected enough medals by winning the Serie C and Serie B several times, among other things. The Serie A was also won once, which happened in 1970.
It would remain with that one title, but Cagliari remained a regular club in Serie A, spending many seasons on the highest level. Their last promotion was in 2016 and after that the club always managed to maintain itself in Serie A. Last season was a lot less strong for Cagliari and the team would finish in 18th place, making relegation to Serie B a fact.
Derby County
Derby County would have held their own last season if they had not been deducted 25 points. The club had massive financial troubles and it even looked for a while that Derby would go bankrupt. The club has now been taken over by a new owner and the club is slowly looking forward again. Despite this, the club dropped from the Championship to League One last season and also lost head coach Wayne Rooney, who decided to leave for the United States.
The honor of Derby and its fans has been greatly tarnished and in recent years the club has received only bad news. Derby must be built from the ground up and will once again command the respect of football fans across England. A wonderful challenge in Football Manager.
