In the good old days the central defender or centre-back had just one job: defend. Central defenders used to be menacing, tough-tackling and hard as nails. They did not need any ball skills as their only goal during a match was to stop the opposing team to score goals.

But much like the roles of the goalkeeper or the full-backs, the job of a centre-back has evolved over the past few decades. There has been a massive change in expected traits, while the transfer fees for central defenders has sky rocketed and it is a matter of time before a centre-back is sold for a fee over €100m.

FM21 Wonderkid Centre-backs

A massive list with 34 talented central defenders. Best on the list is without any question Matthijs de Ligt. The Dutch Juventus defender has the potential to become the best defender in the world and he is already close to his full potential. Other well-known players on the list are Jules Kounde (Sevilla), Wesley Fofana (Leicester City), William Saliba (Arsenal) and Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig). These are all considered to be elite players, meaning they will cost you a massive transfer fee and similar wages. Only the biggest clubs in the world will be able to sign them on a transfer.

If you look below for some bargains you will still have enough choice and there are several very interesting players on our shortlist. What to think of 17-year-old Marko Kana, who plays for Anderlecht. He is not the tallest central defender but he is very good on the ball. Another one to watch is Armel Bella-Kotchap. He is 18-years-old, 1m90 and 87kg. A big defender with massive strength and speed. He plays for German side VfL Bochum and has a contract until the summer of 2024. With a 65.000 value he will be available for a nice transfer fee.
