Life in the Chelsea first team could have definitely gotten off to a better start for Tammy Abraham.
After another stellar personal campaign in the Championship with Aston Villa, the youngster has been thrust into a tricky situation by his parent team. But it’s one we suspect he wouldn’t change even if he could. Chelsea are currently banned from signing new players and weren’t able to bring anyone in during the summer transfer window, save Christian Pulisic, whom they’d signed way back in January but left on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
So Tammy is actually in a great position, given that Olivier Giroud the next best option up front for Frank Lampard. But leading the line for a club of Chelsea’s status in the world’s top competitions come with immense pressure.
The young forward was one of the top recommendations for Football Manager 2019. He ended up scoring 26 very real goals for Villa last season, helping them earn a spot in the top flight and was second only to Norwich’s Teemu Pukki on the scoring chart, with the Finnish hotshot finding the back of the net 29 times.
Abraham is undoubtedly talented and has shown he can hold his own and operate efficiently at the point of attack in England’s second tier. It’s his performances in the Premier League that leave us unconvinced.
The striker got his chance in the top flight with Swansea in the 2017-18 season – that was after coming off a remarkable spell with Bristol City during which he scored 23 goals – but could only register five goals in his 31 league appearances for the Welsh side.
Another loan in the Championship saw him race back to double figures. But there is a fear that we could see a reoccurrence of Premier League fright; wearing the No.9 at Chelsea is not exactly great either.
As it stands, Abraham is 66/1 to win the Golden Boot with Bet365 and those odds seem like they should be less in his favor even where they are. But he’s 33/1 to win the PFA Young Player of the Year award with William Hill. Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is the favorite at 7/1 with Betfair.
England residents looking to engage in PL betting this season shouldn’t miss out on an opportunity to get the latest enhanced odds offers for UK customers from Freebets.com. The site features plenty of great deals from top bookmakers such as the ones mentioned above, as well as others like Coral and 888sport. The latter has Chelsea at 50/1 to win the league this season, with Manchester City the favorites at 11/25.
So should the Blues youngster remain a favorite bargain option as we head into FM20? We’ll see enough by then to know for sure. But if you’re going to play with Chelsea, it would probably be a nice challenge playing with a youthful squad led by Tammy Abraham.
So far, the attacker hasn’t taken his chances in front of goal, hitting the post against the Red Devils and flashing the ball wide of both posts after being played a great pass in the box by Pedro during the Super Cup loss to Liverpool.
His influence was still crucial as he won the penalty that saw the Blues equalize 2-2 during extra time. But he had his spot kick saved by Adrian during the shootout and was the only penalty taker who didn’t score.
Lampard reckons the disappointment can only make him stronger, but it will be up to him to decide how he wants to move forward.
