A closer look at the Sweeper Keeper player role in Football Manager.

What is a Sweeper Keeper?

Football Manager states: The Sweeper Keeper aims to perform two roles, those of the standard Goalkeeper and the outfield Sweeper. Alongside standard goalkeeping duties, he will sweep up balls in front of and wide of the penalty area and initiate counter-attacking moves with direct through balls to breaking players.

The Sweeper Keeper is available on three duties: Defend, Support and Attack.

The last line of defense

A Sweeper Keeper is a goalkeeper who is comfortable playing outside of the penalty area and acting as a sweeper for the team. They often play higher up the pitch than traditional goalkeepers and are more involved in the game. They act as a last line of defense, sweeping up through balls and clearing any danger before it reaches the defensive line.

When do I pick a Sweeper Keeper?

The Sweeper Keeper will prove to be a great option when playing a high defensive line and pressing high up the pitch. They are also effective when facing opposition teams who play with a high line, as they can help create a numerical advantage in midfield by quickly closing down and distributing the ball.

Which attributes does a Sweeper Keeper need?

The Sweeper Keeper requires a combination of technical and mental attributes. They need to have good reflexes, decision making, communication, and anticipation skills. However, they should also be technically proficient with their feet and have excellent distribution skills, allowing them to start counter-attacks quickly.

What are the best player traits for a Sweeper Keeper?

Player traits are actions a player will more likely perform during a match than others. They don't give him extra abilities, but will affect his decision making. A player trait can be learned through individual training or through mentoring.

  • Plays Short Simple Passes: This trait enables the player to distribute the ball quickly and accurately to start counter-attacks.
  • Tries Long Range Passes: This trait enables the player to play long balls accurately to start counter-attacks and catch the opposition off guard.
  • Rushes Out of Goal: This trait enables the player to act as a sweeper and clear any danger before it reaches the defensive line.
  • Start Counter Attacks: With this trait the goalkeeper will look for a quick throw or long pass to initiate a quick counter attack
  • Uses Long Throw to start counter: The goalkeeper will look for a quick and long throw to initiate a quick counter attack (only advisable with a high rating for Throwing)

Which tactical style suits a Sweeper Keeper?

The Sweeper Keeper is best suited to a team that plays a possession-based style of football and presses high up the pitch. They should be comfortable playing out from the back and should be able to quickly distribute the ball to start counter-attacks. The following team instructions can be useful when playing with a Sweeper Keeper:

Play out of Defense: This instruction will encourage the team to play out from the back and involve the Sweeper Keeper in the build-up play.

Distribute to Center Backs: This instruction will encourage the Sweeper Keeper to play short passes to the central defenders, allowing them to build from the back.

Counter: This instruction will encourage the team to press high up the pitch and quickly regain possession, allowing the Sweeper Keeper to act as a sweeper and clear any danger before it reaches the defensive line.
