Spain is one the biggest football nations in the world. They have won back to back European Championships in 2008 and 2012 and in between they won the World Cup in South Africa. Despite falling of their thrown in 2014 and 2016, clubs like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are still dominating European football.
And from these two, Real Madrid have been investing a lot in recent years in Spanish wonderkids instead of buying the best players in the world. The current champions and holder of the Champions League has 7 Spanish players under the age of 24 in their squad and for a club that size, that’s impressive.
Now that got us thinking. If Madrid has 7 amazing young Spanish players, how would this be at other clubs? For that reason we opened the Football Manager 2018 Editor and selected 5 wonderkids you should really be signing in your FM2018 saves. So here is a list with 5 amazing Spanish Wonderkids!
Valencia – Expected fee: 71M
Carlos Soler made his professional debut for Valencia in 2016 and has been steadily claiming a spot in the first 11 from that moment. We can see why Valencia has high hopes for him and can recommend Soler to every FM-fanatic. He is a player that reminds us of Andres Iniesta and he certainly has the potential to match the Spanish legend someday. Don’t expect Soler to be cheap though, as Valencia would like to hold onto him. But, if you have an extra 71M to spend.. invest it in Soler.
Real Sociedad – Expected Fee: 44.5M
Mikel Oyarzabal is a player that we really like in Football Manager 2018. The 20-year-old is a first team regular at his club Real Sociedad and has 65 appearances under his belt already. He is an attacking midfielder, but can also play on either the right or left side of the pitch. We won’t recommend to play him there though, as he lacks speed. Obviously you can train his overall speed, but you will never get a speedy winger like Kingsley Coman. Mikel Oyarzabal has a minimum fee clause in his contract and you will have to pay this in order to sign him. A bit high, but he could be a very valuable player some day.
Espanyol – EXP COST: 19.5M
While Spain has Jose Gaya and Jordi Alba as their main left full-backs, 20-year-old Aaron is a player to watch out for. The Espanyol player has received a call-up in real life and has been a strong force in La Liga. In Football Manager Aaron is a great player to have in your squad, especially when you consider that he is available for a cut price under 20M. For a player with his qualities and potential, that is an absolute bargain.
Valencia – Expected Fee: 22.5M
The second Valencia player on this list is Toni Lato, who happens to be a left full-back as well. While Aaron is availble under 20M, Toni Lato can be signed for 3M more. If you don’t compare Lato with Aaron (which you will automatically do..), you’ll see a good and talented player. He has enough potential to succeed at a world-class club and could be a good addition for any Premier League team, either as a rotation player or a back-up (at a top 5 club). For a 22M fee, Lato is a good buy.
FC Barcelona – Expected Fee: 50M
The 19-year-old Carles Alena is one heck of a talented player and one of the best Spanish wonderkids. He is considered to be one of the bright young stars for the future at Barcelona and is compared to clublegend Xavi. We can see where that comparison is coming from, as the midfielder shows similar attributes as the former Spain international. Alena is expensive to acquire, but he will be worth it in the long run. But keep in mind; the long run. At the start of a new save, Alena will not be good enough to hold a spot at one of the big clubs in the world. But, if you have patience and develop him properly, he will soon be dominating the midfield, sending out passes like the great Xavi would do in his prime.
