Scouts have an important position at your club. These are the guys that will try and find the next Lionel Messi for you. But, they can do a lot more for you than you think. In this Football Manager Staff Guide we will show you the attributes that a scout needs, but we will also show you the various jobs he can do at your club.
There are some attributes that are considered to be essential for scouts. If they score low on one of these, then don’t sign them. However, sometimes your aren’t able to sign the best of the best. In that case: focus on one attribute.
Judging player ability
Key attribute if you want your scout to find the best players. Because having a higher value will give quicker and better results. This attribute will help the scout determine the current ability of a player.
Judging player potential
Next up is the judging player potential attribute. Also vital, but only if you are planning to use a scout to find young players. A scout with a higher rating for this attribute will give you a better and more complete report.

A determined scout will never give up whilst on a scouting trip. This attribute has never been confirmed by SI, but we think that it’s an important attribute. Without determination a scout could stop too easily whilst he is on a scouting trip, but a scout with high determination will motivate himself to find more players.

Different scouts for different jobs
When you are managing a club it is advised to sign different types of scouts for different type of search assignments. It will not be necessary to sign more than 20 who are all roaming the planet looking for the next Lionel Messi. You will have to be smart and sign different scouts for different jobs.
We think there are 4 main jobs that they can fill. These are:
Some scouts should be given the assignment to find players that can make a direct impact in your first team. These guys should be able to judge a players current potential and not so much a player’s potential. However, having him judging a player’s potential is always a plus. So look for ones that have both.
A couple of your scouts should be looking for young players. These guys have high values for Judging Potential. Their job is to find that next Messi. You will have them roaming South-America or the plains of Africa for Wonderkids.
Sign at least one as your main scout. He is your most trusted employee of them all and he will probably be the one with the best ratings on his needed attributes. The Head Scout is the one that you send to watch games if you are interested in a player and he will have the final word in your search for new players.
And finally; sign a scout whose task it will be to solely scout your next opponent. Though it could be handy for this scout to judge your opponent’s potential to spot potential interesting players, it is more important that he is able to judge their current ability, while he must be able to give you advice on your opponents tactics. Look for scouts with higher ratings in the Tactical Knowledge area.
