Paris Saint-Germain is aiming to dominate world football and the French Ligue 1. How different was that at the beginning of this century. Not PSG, not Olympique Marseille and not even AS Monaco managed to show this form of dominance. Except Olympique Lyon, who won a staggering 7 Ligue 1 titles in a row. A record which still stands today.
Olympique Lyon was formed in 1899 as Lyon Olympique Universitaire and was then nationally established as a club in 1950. Since that moment, Lyon has become one of the most supported clubs in France. The club’s most successful period has been the 21st century. The club won its first ever Ligue 1 championship in 2002, starting a national record-setting streak of seven successive titles. Lyon has also won a record seven Trophée des Champions, five Coupe de France titles and three Ligue 2 titles. Their record winning seventh title in 2008 has also been their last title in the Ligue 1.
Lyon has one of the best youth academy’s in France and that is something the club wants you to utilize. The board will instruct you to develop players using the club’s youth system. Something that could be done fairly easy with the possibilities you have at Lyon.
Expectations and Budgets
Lyon’s board expects you to finish in the top 3 of the Ligue 1 and qualify for the Champions League. To accomplish that, you will be given a 36M transfer budget. If you promise them to fight for the title, you will be able to increase the budget close to 50M.
However, with the standard 40M available you will be able to sign at least one or two players during the first season. The question is, do you really need new players?
The finances over at Lyon are impressive. They have an overall balance of 129.282.599M and also have around 100k per week available in their wage budget. They do have a Bank Loan, which will cost you 2.5M per month. However, with the income from the Champions League, you will be able to cover this quite easily.
The squad you have at Lyon is quite amazing to have. There are some experienced players in the form of Nabil Fekir, Rafael and Marcelo and then you have some of the best young French youngsters in the game. While PSG’s squad will be the better one on the long run, but if you manage to keep your squad together you will be able to fight them for the title in a couple of seasons.
Best players and Talents
We would pick a 4-2-3-1 formation for this Lyon team, only because that would have you select all your best forwards in one formation. Depay on AML, Traore on AMR and Fekir on the AMC position will create a dynamic and deadly trio behind your lone striker Moussa Dembele.
On the midfield you have Tousart and Ndombele, who both are very talented and could develop into French internationals. Tousart will be your ball winning midfielder, Ndombele is more a playmaking midfielder. Ideal to have him behind Fekir.
At the back you have three talented players: Mendy, Denayer and Tete. Use them from the first season to develop them even further. They are already good enough to feature in the top of the Ligue 1, playing them regularly will help them even get better. The fourth defender will probably be Brazilian powerhouse Marcelo. Not a world-class defender, but decent enough.
