Part XIII - Are we title contenders?

The Norwegian Football Season is coming to its final weeks and Valdres FK is still hoping to reach unexpected heights. Lead by young Roger Speed, the Northmen have been impressing in recent months, picking up win after win. Will Valdres be able to mount a serious title challenge? Enjoy the read!

In a direct confrontation with League leaders Skedsmo, we would decide if we were going to mount a serious challenge for the title or if we should be concentrating on reaching second or third place. Unfortunately for now it seems we can't fight for the League and I'm quite devastated by that. Why? Well, we played so freaking good, that we should have won that game 0-3. We were absolutely great and deserved far more than that 1-0 loss. Skedsmo had one shot on goal and that would be enough for them to get a vital win...

So, that meant two losses in a row and our Morale got a big hit and that showed in the beginning of the game against Ull/Kisa 2. They took a 0-1 lead right after the kick-off and we weren't able to get a hold of the ball. I made my intentions clear during half-time taking of three players who were nervous. The subs meant a change in Mentality in the squad and in a matter of minutes we had turned the game around, leading 2-1. The game went on and the final whistle came close. We thought we had the game in our pockets, but we were too arrogant. Ull equalized in the 84th minute, capping another goal just two minutes later for a 2-3 lead. We were damn lucky that Dan Monell converted a penalty-kick in injury time after a foul was made on Simen Hoglien.

Despite our Morale getting a small boost after that late and dramatic equalizer, we are still lacking form in this part of the season. In the final game of the month we played well, but were yet again lacking the form we showed earlier on. Despite us taking the lead after 69 minutes, a draw would have been a fair result. The 1-1 from Aurskog did not surprise me one bit. But, in the end we still got away with the win, after Sebastian Stenqvist scored his first goal in over 11 hours of football. The win gave us some vital points in the battle for promotion.

Only three games remaining in the season and we are sitting in fourth place, just behind Hauerseter. The League title is out of our reach, but third place is still up for grabs, especially as Hauerseter is our final opponent in the season. If we could keep the pressure up on them, the final game of the season could be one heck of  game.

If we manage to finish in third place I would be one of the happiest fellows in the world, but if we don't reach it and end in fourth or maybe even fifth, I would still be very happy. Before the season I would have hoped for a finish between the 8th and 12th place, but fighting for a Playoff spot was never on my mind.

Well, it could and it should have been a better month for us. But as I said before, I am very happy with the position we are in right now. The team wasn't able to get all the points we deserved, but we are in fourth place with every chance of getting into third. October is the final month in the Norwegian 3. Divisjon, so in the next update you will find out what has happened. Thank you for reading and I hope to see you again next time!
