Football Manager uses a very big database containing al sorts of data, but is also a game that has to cope with restrictions because of licences. Lucky for us there is an easy way to add real club names, real competition names and real trophy names by applying a Real Name Fix.
If you have installed Football Manager straight out of the box, you will notice that some things don’t add up:
- Some international teams (Germany, Japan) have fake players
- Clubs have fake names (Zebre, FCP, SLB)
- Competition names are fake (EURO Cup)
Don’t worry about a thing. These are easy to fix!
PRO TIP: If you use the FMInside Update, you won’t have to fix the team and league names, as we include these in our Update. If you use our update, you will only have to follow step 1 of this guide.
Before we start:
These steps will work on both new and existing save games.
To make it work in an existing save, simply quit the game, follow the steps below and restart Football Manager. Once loaded you will see all the correct names.
To make sure you can also check the German national team to see if they have real players now. The fix has worked if you see Joachim Löw as the national manager.
Step 1: Remove .lnc Files
The first step in all of this removing the so called .lnc files.
These are located at:
Program Files (x86) \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ football manager xxxx\ data \ db \ xx \ lnc \
[username] > library > Application support > Steam > steamapps >common > football manager xxxx> data > db > 19xx > lnc >
Delete all the files in this folder.
*XXXX are the FM Databases
Every time SI release a new version of Football Manager or release a new database it will create a new version of the folders. So every time SI releases a new data-update (for example the well known winterupdate), you will have to delete the files again.
Step 2: Download a real name fix
After you have deleted the .lnc files, it is time to replace them with files that fixes competition names and other data (this is optional). There are numerous downloads within the Football Manager community that offer Real name fixes. These fixes change the standard Champions Cup to Champions League en EURO Cup to UEFA Europa League.
Step 3: Applying the fix
The next step is applying the Real name Fix in Football Manager.
The first thing you have to do after downloading is, unpacking the download with software like WinRAR (free to download). Unpack the files and then follow the steps for the download. Mostly it will ask to delete folders inside the following path:
Program Files (x86) \ Steam \ steamapps \ common \ football manager xxxx\ data \ db \
[username] > library > Application support > Steam > steamapps >common > football manager xxxx > data > db >
The real name fixes that are available for download contain much more add-ons than only correct league and club names. Some also add packs for player agents, media pundits and several other improvements to the game.
Step 4: Restart Football Manager
To make sure the download and replacing of the files worked correctly you will have to restart Football Manager. Once it has restarted you can load your existing game or start a new game. Then check if the competition names have been changed correctly (Champions Cup should be Champions League).
