Avoiding injuries in Football Manager

FMInside Nov 9, 2020 Last modified: 24 Mar 24,165 views

This guide will give you tips on how to avoid injuries in Football Manager.

In this guide you will find tips to keep injuries to a minimum. You will find some that will undoubtedly sound very logical. Nevertheless, we find it worthwhile to mention them. Even though they sound logical, FM players tend to forget to apply these things in their game.

We also want to emphasize that following our tips will not guarantee that there will not be any injuries at all. These tips simply allow you to minimize the risk.

Also check out our guide on the Medical Centre of Football Manager.

Sell injury prone players

The first thing you should do is sell injury prone players. This is a hidden attribute and can only be seen when using the pre-game or ingame editor or a scouting tool.

However, it's visible in the game and you will find it in the Player Report panel. Your assistant or coaches will inform you about this hidden attribute on players you have in the squad, while scouts inform you of players you might have an interest in.

The player's injury history could also give you some extra information about his injury proneness.

Lower your training intensity

Seasons in football are long and hard, especially if you enter the final stages of European football. During the preseason it is normal to work harder on physical attributes as you want to build fitness levels. But during the season it is good to monitor the intensity of your training. Lower your intensity if you have more than one game per week or even consider resting your players between matches to keep those fitness levels high.

Use squad rotation

Of course you always want your best team to play, but you should really consider a rotation system to keep fitness levels high. If the situation allows you, rotate your squad. Keep track of your schedule and mark your important matches. In other matches you can use young talents or back-ups to keep their fitness levels and match condition at an acceptable level.

Protect your stars

Is seems very simple, but this is very important. You don’t want Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo being out for a large part of the season only because you always let them play.

Treat these players as if they were your own kids. Give them some extra days off of training or take them off the field when the score allows you to.

Use your substitutions

This will work on more than one level.

  • One: you give players rest.
  • Two: you keep your back-ups happier.
  • Three: you can give talented players some extra minutes on the first team, aiding their development.

IMPORTANT: Don't get too scared if a player receives a knock during a match. Check the body language of your player to find out if he has suffered an injury and needs to come off or that he will be able to walk it off and continue playing.

Rest, rest rest!

You have the ability to rest your players during the season. On the training tab you can give your players 1 to 3 days or even a full week rest. Use it! Especially when you have a tight and busy schedule you have to give your players the opportunity to regain their fitness levels.

So yet again; make sure to learn your schedule during the season and know when you can rest important players.

Sign a good and big medical staff

Important tip: always max out the possible Physios, Doctors and Sports scientists. The more you have, the better they will be in keeping your players fit. The sports scientists will advise you on possible injuries and injury risks in the medical centre.

When signing a new physio the following attributes are needed:

  • Physiotherapy/Sports Science
  • Motivation
  • Discipline
  • Determination

Pitch condition

Playing football on a bad pitch increases the risk of injuries. You can check the condition level of your pitch in the ‘facilities tab’ of the Club Information panel. If the pitch is in a bad condition, you can request the board to relay the pitch.

Upgrade your facilities

Improving your facilities decreases the risk of injuries. Sounds cheesy right? But, trust us. The better the facilities, the less injuries will occur during training. Facilities cover the training pitch, weight room and other areas.

Upgrading facilities will also improve player development and youth levels. So that is an extra reason to update those facilities!

To close

Unfortunately you will never be able to prevent injuries in your team. It could also be a spell of simple bad luck. But if you keep an eye on the areas from this article, you will be lowering the risks of injuries.
