Welcome to Matchweek 5 of the FM Premier League! Last time out, my Fulham got a dramatic late winner to get our 2nd win of the campaign. This week, I was facing possibly our toughest challenge yet, title-challengers Manchester City, managed by FMPoacher.
This week, I decided to name the exact same side that played in last week’s 3-2 win over Brighton. I started with an attacking style of play, which soon proved to be a bad idea…
Manchester City vs Fulham
My decision to play an attacking style of play was quickly proved to be the wrong one. Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for City after just 10 minutes, capitalising on a Calum Chambers mistake. A minute later, Silva scored again, once again after a Chambers mistake. Just 2 minutes after that, Silva had his hat-trick. I was somehow 3-0 down after just 15 minutes, and I was starting to fear the worst.
City’s attack did not let up, and it was soon 4-0 through Riyad Mahrez. 10 minutes after that, we gave a silly penalty and gave City a chance to score their 5th. Sergio Aguero stepped up, and scored. Just before half-time, Bernardo Silva had his 4th goal of the game. Unbelievably, we were 6-0 down at half-time.
I made various changes at half-time, with Stefan Johansen coming on for Jean-Michel Seri, and Maxime Le Marchand replacing Timothy Fosu-Mensah. I also switched to a cautious style of play, just to stop this from becoming any worse than it already was!
The changes did make a small impact, as we got a goal through substitute Stefan Johansen. Andre Schurrle made a darting run at the City defense, laying the ball off for Johansen, who finished on the edge of the box.
Our joy didn’t last for long, as we gave away a second penalty just minutes after. Just like the first, Aguero stepped up, and once again, Aguero scored. Aguero completed his hat-trick on 71 minutes, making it 8-1.
I was fuming at my teams performance today, to say the least. We were totally outplayed by City, and my tactics were all wrong. There was some calamitous defensive mistakes, and some pretty dreadful attacking play. It’s hard to find any positives from a performance as bad as that, but Stefan Johansen was fairly impressive when he came off the bench, grabbing his first goal of the league in the process.
Interestingly, myself and FMPoacher decided to play a second leg, where I could try out a counter-attacking style of play. I managed to win that game 2-0, in what was a completely different performance from the first game. It is encouraging to see that my team can play so well with a counter-attacking style, and it has definitely given me something to think about going forward.
Next Opponent: Watford (FMStructured)
Our next opponent is Watford, managed by the league creator FMStructured. I’m expecting another tough tie, but with my new-found tactic I, things could be looking up. I will be looking for a much better performance next week, and hopefully we can forget about this result as soon as possible!
