Welcome to the first round of the FM FA Cup! My Fulham team would be up against Oldham in the first round. After some poor results recently, I was looking to get back to winning ways this week!
This week, I switched back to the vertical tiki-taka that served us well at the start of the season. This is a much more attacking style than the direct counter-attacking style we were playing in recent games. As our opposition was weaker, I thought we could control this game and bag a few goals in the process.
The team was almost completely switched up from last weeks game against Everton. Tim Ream, Denis Odoi and Timothy Fosu-Mensah all came into the defence, while Tom Cairney replaced Jean-Michel Seri. Andre Schurrle and Floyd Ayite started on each wing, with Ryan Sessegnon and Luciano Vietto dropping out.
Fulham vs Oldham
We made an excellent start to the game this week. After a very attacking opening 10 minutes, we found ourselves 3-1 up. Alexsandar Mitrovic scored the opener, with Andre Schurrle scoring just a minute later. Stefan Johansen added to the scoring on 7 minutes. Oldham had a goal through Jose Baxter on 11 minutes, but we responded well.
Alexsandar Mitrovic had his second when Oldham conceded a penalty on 20 minutes. Floyd Ayite then got his first goal of the season, with Stefan Johansen getting his second and our 6th before the half time whistle. What a first half!
The 2nd half was much less exciting, with only 1 goal being scored. Matt O’Riley and Kevin McDonald made their first appearances for me from off the bench. Andre Schurrle got our 7th goal on 53 minutes, and we saw out the result from there.
We have finally gotten a win after such a long wait! Although our opposition was considerably weaker than us, I was happy with my team’s performance. It was a rotated side that played, and there were a few faces that impressed.
Denis Odoi was solid at the back, and may well see a start in the league, while Andre Schurrle and Tom Cairney both returned to the first team and impressed.
Next Opponent: Arsenal (OldGouldandBlack)
Next week we are back to the Premier League with a tough game against OldGouldandBlack’s Arsenal. We will need to be at our best if we are to take anything from this game. This week’s performance wa very encouraging, and hopefully we can push on from here!
