Borussia Dortmund Club History
Borussia Dortmund was founded in 1909 and have been one of the major clubs in German football for many years now. The club has one 8 league titles and had finished as runner-up on 7 occassions. That makes them the 3rd most successful club in Germany. Dortmund has won 3 of their 8 titles prior to 1965, but most successes were during the mid and late 90’s and later on again from 2010 and on. During their successes in the 90’s, Dortmund managed to win their first and only Champions League, beating Juventus in the final.
Borussia Dortmund is a club with loads of history in the Bundesliga and are well known for their attacking minded football. The board expects from you to carry on that tradition and play attacking football. Another key philosophy is to develop young players through your own youth set-up. The club has seen some amazing players coming through its own youth set up and the board would like you to continue that tradition as well. With superb youth facilities, you should be able to develop some great youngsters during the years. But, make sure to invest funds into this area, as your coaching and scouting can be improved.

Expectations & Budgets
The board at Borussia Dortmund will expect from you Champions League qualification at the end of the first season. That means you will have to finish at least in the top 3, a position that should be easy to reach. You have one of the best squads in the Bundesliga and you might even have the ability to challenge FC Bayern for the title. In the German DFB Pokal you are expected to reach the final. Also an expectation that can be met quite easily, if the draw is friendly enough. It could be possible to get drawn against FC Bayern away from home, which would make it more difficult…
If you want to increase your budgets, simply tell your board you will win the title and win the cup, while you reach the semi-final in the Champions League. Your transfer budget will increase to almost 48M, your wage budget will be 2.3M per week.
Borussia Dortmund has one of the best squads in the German Bundesliga. The team has a good mix of experience and younger players in the squad. Experienced players to build on are Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Marcel Schmelzer, Nuri Sahin, Shinji Kagawa, Mario Götze and Marco Reus. But the team also has some exciting young talents like Dan-Axel Zagadou, Christian Pulisic, Manuel Akanji, Julian Weigl and Mahmoud Dahoud.
At Dortmund you can pick several tactics to challenge for the title. A 3-5-2 with attacking wingbacks is one of those options and could be very dangerous. Our favorite formation is the 4-2-3-1 formation, which comes closest to the 4-3-3 the club has been using for years now. But we would like to emphasize that a 3-5-2 could also be deadly with this group of players.
Our pick in goal is Roman Burki. Despite Roman Weidenfeller still has qualities, Burki would be your best pick at first. But a new goalkeeper is advised.
The back four will be Jeremy Toljan, Omer Toprak, Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Raphael Guerreiro. A good mix of defensinve minded players and two full-backs that love to attack.
On the midfielder we have posted Julian Weigl as the most defensive MC, who will feature as a playmaker, while Gonzalo Castro will be the man to works between defense and attacking midfield. The three behind your lone striker will be Christian Pulisic from the left (or Marco Reus when fit), Mario Götze in the centre and Andriy Yarmolenko from the right side.
Up front we have posted Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang’s replacement Michy Batshuayi. He will play as a Complete Forward, to make your attack more dynamic.
The team has 3 team leaders: Nuri Sahin, Mario Götze (vice-captain) and Marco Reus. While Götze and Reus will be playing a lot, Sahin is a player that will be more of a rotation player. But, keep in mind that if he isn’t happy, he can rally up some teammates against you. Players that are still trying to fit in are the younger and new players. They will move into the other groups as time progresses.
Marco Reus – AML – 28 years
Marco Reus is undoubtly one of the most gifter attackers in modern football. The lad has only one problem; he can get injured from looking at a flower. If you manage to keep him fit; sit back and enjoy the ride. He will score goals, give assists and turn defenders crazy. It will be difficult to keep him out of the medical centre though..
Christian Pulisic – AM LRC – 18-years-old
Christian Pulisic might not be the best player looking at his current ability, but this kid has the highest potential of any player in your squad. We feel that he should be playing every possible minute during the season to make sure he keeps on developing. Pulisic is one of the best wonderkids in Football Manager 2018 and should be cherished all the time. If you want to dominate the Bundesliga for years to come, Pulisic should be your key man!
