6 tasks to complete at Manchester United

Manchester United is one of the most picked clubs in Football Manager. The Red Devils have a large fan base and players love to bring success back to Old Trafford. After Sir Alex Ferguson retired the club has been really struggling to get the results back to Manchester.

To bring back European success as well as Premier League glory, we have taken control of United in Football Manager 2018 and came up with 6 different tasks for you to complete during the first months in the game.

David de Gea probably is one of the best (or even the best) goalkeepers in FM18. The 26-year-old Spanish goaltender should really be someone you would want to keep around at the club for many years to come. He has an automated contract extension set for one year, but we would advise you to keep him at the club for the long term with a new and improved contract. He is open to renew his current deal, which pays him 200k a week. But, expect to pay top dollar for him.

Other player contracts that will run out after the first season:

Michael Carrick, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata.

Used as a utility player by Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal, Marouane Fellaini managed to stay on at United for some years now. But let’s be honest, the man isn’t good enough for the club. Seeing his current deal runs out at the end of the season, you might want to take the chance to sell the Belgian powerhouse.

He has a value of 20M and there are numerous clubs interested to pay a fee around that mark. So be wise, and sell Fellaini during the first window. There are much better players available for the wages you pay to keep him on. Believe it or not, the Belgian earns a 90k a week and could cost you 30k for every match he plays.

Looking at the squad at United you have 3 players that can play as a right winger: Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Jesse Lingard. Looking at that list we can conclude one thing; you will need a new winger. Mata and Mkhitaryan aren’t typical wingers and will play their best football in the centre of the pitch, while Jesse Lingard just isn’t good enough.

One thing you really need to do is sign new coaches for the first team. Next to your assistant managers you have a total of 4 coaches at the club, none of them being general coaches. There are 4 open spots available at United to fill and we would advise you to fill these spots to reduce the workload of your current coaching team. Plus signing new coaches according to the FMInside 5 star training guide, you will be increasing the quality of your training to superb!

Let’s face it, nobody likes injured players during a season. And we would have expected that Jose Mourinho would have a large medical team at his disposal. But reality shows us something different. United has 2 physios at the club, one chief doctor, a sports scientist and a head of sports science. With the budget you have available at United, you should increase the medical team with at least 2 physios and at least one sports scientist. The board will allow 5 more signings in this department and we would advise you to fill these right away.
