When it comes to developing their own youth, few teams in the world can compete with Ajax. When you are talking about a production line of real world-class talent, Ajax is one of the first club names that comes to mind. The Football Manager database has seen many great Ajax youth players in the past, but what about Football Manager 2018?
In this article we will taking a look at 6 of these Ajax wonderkids. And for all of these we can say; you will sign them eventually.
MATTHIJS DE LIGT
18-year-old Matthijs de Ligt was a U19 player last season when former manager Peter Bosz decided to give him his debut. The young defender impressed enough to feature in eleven league games and even the Europa League final (2-0 loss against Man. United). The Football Manager 2018 database reflects the talent that was shown last season. De Ligt is already one of the better defenders at Ajax and he has the potential to be an elite defender. He can play on more than one position and he is a ball-playing defender. In a 3-man defense, De Ligt would be an ideal addition.
DONNY VAN DE BEEK
After Davy Klaassen made a big money move to Everton, Donny van de Beek jumped right into Ajax’s first team. The young central midfielder has even been called up for the Dutch national team in recent months. In the FM18 database Van de Beek could be a very good player. He is 20-years-old and will attract some of the big teams right away. We have seen him end up at clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur, making him one of the elite players in Europe. Van de Beek is one of the real gems at Ajax.
Whilst Ajax is well known for its own youth set-up, the club decided to splash the cash last winter on Brazilian winger David Neres. The club paid 13.25M, making Neres one of the most expensive players in the club’s history. Despite a difficult first 6 months at Ajax, the Brazilian has settled in well, claiming a spot in the first team. Neres is a good player in FM18, but we feel he won’t live up to other great Brazilian players like Neymar, Gabriel Jesus and Philippe Coutinho. Whilst Neres could be player that can shine in a big league like the Premier League, we don’t think he will be one of the elite players in the game.
Justin Kluivert followed his fathers footsteps at Ajax, making his debut before he turned 18. Whilst his father made the winning goal in the Champions League final in 1995, the young Kluivert has yet to impress in the Ajax first team. In Football Manager 2018 Kluivert is a really good dribbler with a lot of speed. Being only 18-years-old there is much potential to be explored. He has the quality to feature in the Ajax first team right away and he will only become better as the years progress. We are sure he will develop into a Dutch national player, but we fear the European elite might be a step too big for Kluivert.
Danish striker Kasper Dolberg got his big break last season and showed on more than one occasion he is a very gifted football player. He was nominated for the European Golden Boy earlier this year and also made his debut for the Danish national team. Dolberg was consdered a big wonderkid in FM17 and he has continued that trend in Football Manager 2018. The young Dane is one of the best strikers under 20 and will become one of the elite strikers in almost every save you will play.
