To give your players the best training, you will have to sign the best coaches. Sounds logical doesn’t it? But how do you find the best coaches in Football Manager? In this guide we will explain the basic formula to calculate and find the best coaches for each and individual category in Football Manager. This is called the 5 star training method.

Coaches in Football Manager receive an amount of stars for a training category. 5 star training is the best you can get and 1 star is the worst. Although it shows the quality of that particular category, it also shows the Workload for a coach in a category.

Having a high Workload can result in having wining players about the quality of the training. So remember; if there is ever a player that is concerned about the Team Training, check the Workload first in the training tab in Football Manager.

General  training in Football Manager can be divided in three different areas, which all have their own categories:

Fitness
  • Strength
  • Aerobic
General
  • Tactics
  • Ball Control
  • Defending
  • Attacking
  • Shooting
Goalkeeping
  • Shot Stopping
  • Handling
  • Distribution

How to reach 5 star training

In an ideal situation, you would have a specialist coach for each of the nine different categories. Each coach will need different attributes, but there are three that are always needed if you want 5 star training. These are:

  • Determination
  • Discipline
  • Motivation

From now on we will refer to these attributes as ‘DDM’.

Then using the following formula, you can calculate if a coach will get 5 star training before you sign him:

Attribute * X + DDM * X

Looks difficult, but believe us when we say this is very easy to apply in your game. We will show you every calculation and we will give some easy to follow examples.

If you don’t want to be busy calculating the stars manually, you can always use our list with the Best Coaches in Football Manager 2018.

Fitness coaching

A good fitness coach always needs Fitness training. So that is the attribute that is needed in for this calculation. Both Aerobic and Strength coaches have the same formula.

The formula is:
Fitness Training * 9 + DDM * 2

If the outcome is 270 or higher; the coach will get 5 stars. If the coach scores lower he will get:

240-269 = 4.5 stars
210-239 = 4 stars
180-209 = 3.5 stars
150-179 = 3 stars
120-149 = 2.5 stars
90-119 = 2 stars
60-89 = 1.5 stars
30-59 = 1 star
0-29 = 0.5 star

Example

football manager 2018 coaching example

You have the following coach under contract and we would like to know how many stars he will get for his best attribute: fitness.

As you have learned before, you will need the following formula:

Fitness * 9 + DDM * 2

If you use the formula correctly you will get:
14 * 9 + 37 * 2 = 126 + 74 = 200

If we the take a look at the results for the Fitness Training Category, we see that: 180-209 = 3.5 star. This means that this coach will receive a 3.5 star maximum on fitness training.

To close…

Use our formula’s to create the best possible coaching staff at your club. If you play your cards right, you will have no troubles getting 5 stars on all categories.

  1. Thanks for the post very enlightening! I have 3 GK Coaches with 5 star training but using the aforementioned formula (Goalkeepers * 8 + Tactical * 3 + DDM * 3) their score is lower than 360:

    1) GK Shot Stopping 20, Tactical 08, Det 17, LoD 18, Mot 17 = 340
    2) GK Handling 20, Tactical 10, Det 16, LoD 17, Mot 12 = 325
    3) GK Distribution 20, Tactical 09, Det 16, LoD 17, Mot 18 = 340

(Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining or anything, just trying to figure out the game)

  2. The above calculations can’t be right in FM18. Just to test with Tactics, I used the in-game editor on myself (the head coach). I’m at a EPL club with full state-of-the-art facilities, and I assigned every other coach to Tactics to mitigate workload issues. Here’s what I get:

Tac Disc Det Mot True Stars This Calc
    —– —- —– —– ———— ———-
    19 12 1 1 3.5 52 pts (3 stars)
    19 13 1 1 4 53 pts (3 star)
    19 7 5 5 3.5 55 pts (3 stars)
    19 8 5 5 4 56 pts (3 stars)
    20 12 1 1 3.5 54 pts (3 stars)
    20 13 1 1 4 55 pts (3 stars)

It looks like there must be something non-linear happening with stats to star ratings in FM 18.

  3. There might also be a problem with the tactical calc?
Same person give 3,5 stars based on your rules, but game show 3 stars. The calculation give exactly 60 (10*2)+40 could it be that it was 0-10 that was 0,5 stars and not 0-9 and so on?

  4. I think you need to have another look at your Goalkeeping calculation – when I do the math for my coaches the numbers doesn’t add up. First of all I assume that you mean that you should use GK Shot Stopping for Shot Stopping, GK Handling for Handling and so on, but I also think that Distribution is not based on tactical stat, but technical stat

Here is my calc based on a coach with the following stats:
    Determination 10; Discipline 17; Motivation 13; Tactical = 10; Technical 11; Distribution 1; Handling 2; Shot Stopping 2, so DDM = 40

    ShotStopping Calc = (Shot Stopping 2 * 8 (16) + Tactical 10 * 3 (30) + DDM 40 * 3 (120) = 166 = 2,5stars (Game show 2 stars)
    Handling Calc = (Handling 2 * 8 (16) + Tactical 10 * 3 (30) + DDM 40 * 3 (120) = 166 = 2,5stars (Game show 2 stars)
    Distribution Calc (Distribution 1 * 8 (8) + Tactical 10 * 3 (30) + DDM 40 * 3 (120) = 158 = 2stars (Game shot 1,5 stars)

    • Hi m8, Thanks for the feedback. The distribution; noted. We will look into that. About the calculations; the article states; a maximum of stars. So if 166 will give 2.5 stars, it means that this coach will have a maximum of 2.5 stars not a minimum. Also if a coach will get the maximum depends on the situation at the club.

      • What besides the coaches stats will affect the stars and is there a way to calculate it, so if you are looking for new coach for defending you can calculate the exact amount of stars he will get when hired?

        • not exactly i am afraid. It depends on the level of your facilities, the number of coaches you have. The stars that are given for the different categories reflect quality, but also workload. If you have a large group of players and a coach is assigned to a category on his own you will never get the full 5 stars, simply because of the high workload. So its not possible to calculate the exact amount a coach will get, only a suggested maximum with his stats. Maybe there is a formula available, but we haven’t found it (yet :P)

          • Okay. I am aware that the stars calculated will be be wrong if you assign a coach to several categories, and guess that I am okay with maximum stars.

As part of my job I am working with a reporting tool from Microsoft called Power BI and I am creating a model that will be able to calculate maximum possible training stars per category for either yourself, coaches in club or couches you want to scout. The way that the models work is that you from FM18 go to the coaches profile and print them as a .html file and then put them into one of 3 folders and then update the model and it will calculate the maximum number of available stars per category per coach.

  5. you sure that DDM totals 35? it should be 36 if I am not mistaken and as such the total if 255. Stars won’t change but at least people will not get confused.

Lewis Cook

Lewis Cook is one of the ideal Brexit players to keep watching. He plays for Bournemouth, but is keen on moving to one of the club inside the top 6. He will cost you roughly around 45 to 50 million and that is considered a steal for this type of player in the Premier League. He is a very good playmaker and could easily play for one of the big teams in the Premier League.

Lisandro Martinez

Lisandro Martinez is a real catch in Football Manager 2019. The young Argentinian is a talented centre-back and is available for an expected 7M transfer fee. Ideal player to have if you like longer saves and need a good ball playing defender who is able to develop a lot.

Julian Brandt

Julian Brandt has the potential to become one of the elite players in Football Manager 2019. The German winger shows some lethal skills and will have no trouble with playing for the biggest clubs in the world. He has a 70m price tag, which seems a fair price in modern football.

Franck Kessie

If you are looking for a tireless midfielder Franck Kessie could be the ideal player for you. The Ivorian international has all the attributes for a very good ball-winning midfielder. However, it is not possible to sign Kessie in the first two seasons as he is on a loan from Atalanta and will sign on a permanent deal for Milan in the summer of 2019.

Javairo Dilrosun

Former Manchester City left winger Javairo Dilrosun is considered as one of the bigger talents from Holland. He has the potential to become a regular international and is a very handy player if you love a left-footed left winger that will cross in the ball onto your striker. For 22.5 he could be yours, so keep an eye out for him!

Josip Brekalo

Josip Brekalo is a talented player who could develop into an awesome inside forward. The Croatian international is already a first team regular at Wolfsburg and it is expected that he will leave the club on a short term. Keep him on your shortlist as the expected 60m fee could drop after a couple of seasons.
