Bolton / Bury
The two obvious candidates are Bolton Wanderers and Bury. The first was saved from bankruptcy in August, but the team is still struggling at the bottom in the League One with a very small squad. It could prove to be quite the challenge to save them from relegation int he first season.
For Bury it remains unclear what will happen with the club. The Football League expelled them from the League One this season, but they could now return to the league in the 2020/2021 season. We don’t know yet what Bury’s situation will be in FM20, but we are sure that there will be downloads available to manage them in the game.
After their shock Champions League win in 2010, Internazionale have fallen down the ladder in the Italian Serie A. After Jose Mourinho led the team to the CL, the club has not been able to reproduce his performances in both the league and in Europe. Inter’s best finishes in the years after the CL are three fourth places in the Serie A. However, with Antonio Conte (or you) at the helm and the signings of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez, Inter could prove to be a title challenge in the Serie A.
The Blues are also an obvious team on this list. The club has been handed a transfer ban, which makes it an interesting team to play with in FM20. You are forced to focus on your own youth team in the first half of the first season, making it a difficult challenge to keep your job if you take control at Stamford Bridge.
In last seasons Serie A, Atalanta surprised friends and foes by finishing in third place. This season the club will be making its debut in the Champions League. Atalanta has a young but talented squad and an excellent youth academy you can use to grow your team. It will be a fun challenge to see how this side will cope with both national and international football in the same season. Are you able to surprise again and reach the knock-out stages of the Champions League?
In 2017 Royal Antwerp returned to the Belgian Jupiler Pro League after spending thirteen years in the lower leagues. The club was saved from bankruptcy in 2015 and has been climbing up the ladder from that moment. Last season Antwerp finished in fourth place in the Belgian playoffs, securing European football for the 2019/2020 season. This summer the club has made some awesome signings including Steven Defour, Kevin Mirallas, Ritchie de Laet and Wesley Hoedt. This team could be a serious title challenger in Belgium.
FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique invested in a small Andorran football club FC Andorra in 2018. From that moment the club has been in the spotlight in Spain. FC Andorra is one of the few clubs that play in a foreign league as they are active in the Spanish Football pyramid. After the club was bought by Pique, Andorra has been promoted two times. And now – for the first time in history – FC Andorra are now playable in Football Manager! The club currently plays in the Segunda B in Spain and could be under your management in FM20.
Football in Berlin has been coming from Hertha BSC in Germany. But for the 2019/2020 season there is a new player in town. Union Berlin were promoted for the first time in the club’s history towards the Bundesliga. The club has the smallest budget, smallest stadium and probable the most inexperienced squad in the league. Is Union ready to match other Bundesliga first timers like 1899 Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig to claim a top five finish in their first season?
With Football Manager opting for a purple skin with FM19, Fiorentina has been one of the most picked teams in the game. And we must say; it suits the club! La Viola is a big team in Italy, having a massive history in the Serie A. The club has a talented group of players, with Enrico Chiesa as the big eye catcher. He could be the player you build a new team around. And with the signing of former Bayern star Franck Ribery, Fiorentina could be one of the surprise performers in Italy.
A club from Australia is also on our list. Western United will make its official debut in Football Manager 2020, competing in the Australian A-League as a new club. The club was established in 2017 and will play their games from Melbourne. A new club is always fun to take on as they have a trophy cabinet waiting to be filled.
We are not sure if Inter Miami will be in FM20 from the start, but this club should definitely be on your shortlist of clubs to play with if possible. Your owner will be David Beckham, your home city will be Miami and you will be playing in black & pink shirts. What is not to like? Inter Miami will be joining the Major League soccer in 2020 as an expansion team. An empty trophy cabinet is waiting for you!
Last club on the list is Sporting Portugal. This club is considered as one of the major three clubs in the Southern European country. However, their trophy cabinet is quite empty if you compare it to arch rivals Benfica and FC Porto. Their last league title was won back in 2002 and their only European succes was a Cup winners Cup in 1964. With Benfica (37 titles) and FC Porto (28 titles) you have some major rivals to beat, making it an interesting long term save to play. Are you able to become the most successful team in Portugal?
