Player Roles: Goalkeepers

Goalkeepers are a very important part of your tactics. The way they distribute the ball and the way he will sweep up behind your defense is linked to your teams overall style of play. Correctly setting up your goalkeeper could significantly improve your team’s performances during the game, as a lot of attacks will start at the goalkeeper.

In this guide we will try to explain the role your Goalkeeper will or could have and will try and explain the difference between the two possible Roles you can assign: Goalkeeper and Sweeper Keeper. We will also discuss the most important attributes for each role, which Player Preferred Moves (PPM) could fit that specific role and which Role you could use for different tactics.

GOALKEEPER

degea.jpgThe main- and most used Role for this position is the Goalkeeper Role. In this Role the player will try to play without taking too many risks. If he has the ball: he will either play it away to an open player or if there are no open players available, he will play it long.

Distribution

The distribution of the goalkeeper will depend on your tactical style. If you are using a Containing style, your Goalkeeper will tend to play it safe and clear the ball as deep as possible. If you play in a more Attacking style he will feed the defense so attacks can be build from of the defense.

Player Preferred Moves

If you use a defensive or counter style it is advised to teach your Goalkeeper the PPM 'Uses Long Throw to start Counter Attacks'. That way the Goalkeeper will look for a quick throw, which could lead into a quick break.

SWEEPER KEEPER

neuer.jpgThe Sweeper Keeper will do exactly the same thing as a 'normal' Goalkeeper, but he will also aim to perform the role of the outfield Sweeper. In this 'extra' role the Sweeper Keeper will tend to sweep up balls in front of and wide of the penalty area, but will also try to initiate attacks and possible counter-attacking moves.

A Sweeper Keeper can play in 3 different duties, all of them have their own functionality:

  • Defend: the keeper will sweep less as he is more careful, but he will still look for the pass to initiate Counter-Attacks.
  • Support: the Keeper will clear the areas just outside the penalty box and he will look for the pass to initiate Counter-Attacks.
  • Attack: the Keeper will travel some distance outside the penalty box and he will look for the pass to initiate Attacks.

TACTICAL STYLES

It is very important to match your Goalkeeper Role with your tactical instructions and tactical style you are using at that moment. For example: Do not use a Sweeper Keeper in an attacking duty If you play a Deep Defensive Line, because your Goalkeeper and defenders will be in each others way. We will set some examples of tactical styles you can use in FM16 and which Goalkeeper Role and Distribution Instructions would be advised.

Defensive / Counter Attacking

Selected Role: Goalkeeper

Distribution: More Direct Passes and Fewer Risky Passes in combination with a Strong Striker up front. More Direct Passes and More Risky Passes in combination with fast and creative Wingers. If you play with a Fast Striker instruct the Goalkeeper to Distribute over Opposition Defense as well.

GK Distribution: Take Long Kicks and Distribute to Target Man in combination with a Strong/Fast Striker up front. Throw it Long and Distribute to Flanks if you play with Fast Wingers. If your Goalkeeper is not able to Throw a ball, switch to Take Long Kicks.

Normal

Selected Role: Goalkeeper

Distribution: Pass it Shorter and Fewer Risky Passes

GK Distribution: Roll it out or Short Kicks and Distribute to Full Backs/Center Backs

Attacking/All Out

Selected Role: Sweeper Keeper in combination with a high defensive line. In an attacking Tactical Style you tend to press on the opponents half. Therefore your defense will move up the pitch, leaving some space behind itself. By having a Sweeper Keeper (on Attack Duty) he will sweep the area outside the box if your opponent will try and play it over your own defence.

Distribution: Pass it Shorter and More Risky Passes

GK Distribution: Roll it out or Short Kicks and Distribute to Full Backs/Center Backs if you are in an attacking Tactical Style, or distribute long balls if you are on an All Out Attack Tactical Style.
